Cairn Circle Crew Lough Meath Stones

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Cairn and Stone Circle at Lough Crew, County Meath, Republic of Ireland, is an enigmatic and awe-inspiring ancient monument that has captivated visitors for centuries. This photograph, taken circa early 1900s, offers a breathtaking view of the cairn and standing stones that surround it. The Great Cairn, also known as the "Loughcrew Cairns," is a Neolithic tomb located atop a hill overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Crew. The site is believed to date back to around 3200 BC and is one of the most important megalithic sites in Ireland. The cairn is covered in large, intricately carved stones, some of which are adorned with elaborate sun motifs, suggesting that the site may have been used for solar worship. The surrounding stone circle, which is believed to date from the same period, consists of 127 stones arranged in a circular pattern around the cairn. The purpose of the stone circle is not fully understood, but it may have been used for rituals or ceremonies related to the farming calendar or the changing of the seasons. The landscape around Lough Crew is rich in history and mythology. According to local legend, the site was the home of the ancient goddess of fertility, Eriu, who was said to have given her name to Ireland. The area is also believed to have been a place of healing, with the waters of Lough Crew said to have curative properties. Today, The Great Cairn and Stone Circle at Lough Crew remain an important cultural and spiritual site, attracting visitors from around the world who come to marvel at the beauty and mystery of this ancient place. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to a world of myth and legend, where the sacred and the natural were intertwined.
