During the late 18th century, Onslow served as a Privy Counselor and was a key figure in the administration of King George III. He was also a trusted advisor to the influential Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger. Onslow's diplomatic skills were put to the test during the French Revolution, as he played a crucial role in negotiating the Peace of Amiens in 1802. Despite his political successes, Onslow's tenure was not without controversy. In 1782, he was impeached for his role in the East India Company scandal, but was ultimately acquitted. The earl continued to serve in various capacities until his retirement from public life in 1806. George Earl of Onslow passed away on February 11, 1814, at the age of 83. His legacy as a skilled statesman and diplomat endures, leaving a lasting impact on British history. This portrait serves as a testament to his distinguished career and the era in which he lived.
