Born into a noble family, Tavannes began his military career under King Francis I and quickly distinguished himself in battle. He played a key role in the Battle of Pavia in 1525, where the French army was defeated by the Spanish, and was taken prisoner by Charles V. Tavannes spent the next 12 years as a captive, but he never lost his spirit or his loyalty to the French crown. Upon his release in 1537, Tavannes returned to France and continued to serve his king with distinction. He played a crucial role in the Italian Wars, leading French forces to victory in several battles and earning the respect and admiration of his comrades and enemies alike.
