23rd Arrival Basilica Coffin Francisco Franco Mortal Valle Aisa

EDITORS COMMENTS
November 23, 1975, Madrid, Spain: A solemn procession carries the coffin containing the mortal remains of Francisco Franco, Spain's controversial and long-reigning dictator, to the Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen. Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975, died in the Balearic Islands on November 20, 1975, at the age of 82. His death marked the end of the Franco regime and the beginning of Spain's transition to democracy. The Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen, located in the Guadarrama Mountains, was built between 1940 and 1959 as a tribute to the fallen soldiers of the Nationalist side during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Franco himself played a significant role in its construction. The basilica is a massive monument, consisting of a large cross atop a towering cliff face, and a crypt containing the remains of Franco and other prominent Nationalists. The arrival of Franco's coffin at the basilica was a highly political event. Franco's death had been kept secret for several days, and his burial at the Valley of the Fallen was a deliberate attempt by his supporters to maintain his legacy and keep alive the memory of his regime. The event was met with protests from opponents of Franco, who saw his burial at the basilica as an affront to the victims of his regime. The controversy surrounding Franco's burial continued for decades, with calls for his remains to be removed from the basilica and given a more democratic and respectful burial. This historic photograph captures the solemn arrival of Franco's coffin at the Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen, marking the end of an era in Spanish history and the beginning of a new chapter for the country.
