Born in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, Francis followed in the footsteps of his older brother Cecil, joining the British Army in 1870. He served in various capacities throughout the British Empire, including in the Sudan and the Zulu War, where he distinguished himself as a brave and capable soldier. Francis Rhodes' military career was not limited to the battlefield, however.
