EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the elegance and opulence of Florentine fashion during the 15th century. The two figures, both dressed in the latest styles, wear garments that represent the height of Florentine fashion during this period. The houppelandes, or gowns, are fur-lined and edged, adding an air of luxury and warmth. The funnel sleeves and hoods are typical of Florentine design, providing both functionality and style. The huke, a type of overgarment, is also fur-trimmed and worn over a doublet. Both men wear hose, which were fitted, close-fitting garments that reached from the waist to the ankles. The piked shoes, or cracowes, with their distinctive upturned toes, add an element of flair to their outfits. The caps, or berets, complete the look. The man on the left wears an Italian tabard, a short, sleeveless garment that was often worn as an outer layer. He also wears stockings, which were typically made of wool and held up by garters. The man on the right wears poulaines, which were long, pointed shoes with toes that were often several inches longer than the rest of the shoe. This photograph, dating from around 1425, provides a glimpse into the fashionable world of the Florentine elite during the medieval period. The intricate details of the garments, from the fur trimmings to the piked shoes, demonstrate the care and attention to detail that went into creating these beautiful and elegant outfits.
