1776 1809 Baptista Ferd Ferdinand Patriot Schill
EDITORS COMMENTS
Ferdinand Baptista Schill, a German soldier and patriot, is depicted in this striking 19th century print. Born in 1776, Schill began his military career in the Austrian army but later joined the French Revolutionary forces, becoming a prominent figure in the German legions. In 1805, he led a successful uprising against the Danish army in Holstein, which earned him the title "King of Holstein." However, his allegiance to the French cause was short-lived, and he switched sides once again, this time joining the Russian army in their campaign against Napoleon. Tragically, Schill was killed in battle on January 13, 1809, at the age of 33. His death marked the end of the Holstein War of Succession and left a lasting impact on German nationalist sentiment. This print, created in the aftermath of Schill's death, captures the heroic image of the charismatic leader, dressed in the uniform of a Russian hussar officer. The inscription at the bottom reads 'Ferdinand von Schill, King of Holstein, 1776-1809.' Schill's legacy as a German patriot and military leader continues to be celebrated in German history.
