Felix Martyr

EDITORS COMMENTS
Felix the Martyr: A Testament to Faith and Perseverance in Ancient Rome This evocative image depicts Saint Felix the Martyr, a third-century Roman Christian saint and bishop, who is believed to have lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD). The exact details of Felix's life are shrouded in myth and history, but legend holds that he was born in the region of Narni, in central Italy, and was consecrated bishop of the city of Narni by Pope Sixtus II. During the Great Persecution of Diocletian, Felix was arrested and subjected to various tortures for his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. According to tradition, he was first scourged, then thrown into a fiery brass bull, but emerged unharmed. Finally, he was beheaded on January 14, 303 AD, together with other Christian martyrs, including Saint Eutropius and Saint Vitalis. Despite the brutal circumstances of his death, Felix's story is one of faith, courage, and perseverance. His martyrdom is celebrated as a triumph of the Christian faith over pagan Rome, and he is revered as a patron saint of animals, especially oxen, and of the city of Narni. This print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the solemnity and dignity of Felix's story. The image shows the saint in the act of blessing, his gaze fixed on the heavens, surrounded by symbols of his martyrdom - the palm leaf, the bull, and the sword. The muted colors and intricate details of the print transport us back to the ancient world, inviting us to reflect on the enduring power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit.
