EDITORS COMMENTS
Edouard Mortier, Duc de Treviso: A French Military Commander and Marechal de France This striking portrait captures Edouard Mortier, Duc de Treviso (1768-1835), a prominent French military commander and Marechal de France, during the height of his career. Born on February 15, 1768, in Bordeaux, Mortier began his military service in the French army at a young age. He rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. Mortier's military prowess was first showcased during the Italian campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars. He was instrumental in the capture of Mantua in 1797 and went on to serve under Napoleon Bonaparte, who recognized his talents and appointed him as a general in the Grande Armée. Mortier's military success continued throughout the Napoleonic Wars, including his role in the Battle of Wagram in 1809, where he commanded the French right wing and secured a decisive victory. Despite his loyalty to Napoleon, Mortier survived the fall of the Napoleonic regime and continued to serve the Bourbon monarchy. He was made a Marechal de France by King Louis-Philippe in 1831. Mortier's military career spanned over five decades, and he played a significant role in shaping the military history of France. This portrait, taken during Mortier's later years, captures the wisdom and experience etched on his face. His piercing gaze and stern expression convey a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting his unwavering commitment to his country and his military duties. The portrait is a testament to Mortier's legacy as a respected military commander and a pivotal figure in French history.
