1863 1938 Ally Annunzio Awake Entry Favour Gabriele Barbarism

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the passionate fervor of Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio as he delivers a rousing pro-war speech in Rome's Piazza Venezia on May 13, 1915. D'Annunzio, born in 1863, was a renowned poet, playwright, and journalist, known for his flamboyant personality and nationalistic sentiments. With Italy still neutral in the ongoing First World War, D'Annunzio used his oratorical skills to galvanize the Italian people and urge them to join the Allied forces against the Central Powers. In his impassioned speech, he called upon Rome to "awake" as an ally against the perceived barbarism of the enemy. The crowd, inspired by D'Annunzio's words, responded with enthusiasm, waving Italian flags and chanting for war. This historical moment marked a turning point in Italian public opinion, and just a few weeks later, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary on May 23, 1915. This photograph is a testament to the power of words and the emotional appeal of nationalistic sentiments during a time of global conflict.
