B Ward, Quex Park VAD Hospital: A Glimpse into Wartime Nursing at the Powell-Cotton Museum This evocative photograph captures the daily life of B Ward at Quex Park VAD Hospital during World War I. The ward was situated in one of the galleries of the Powell-Cotton Museum, now known as Gallery 2 (2014). Natural history exhibitions, including the diorama of mammals from Kashmir, can be seen on the walls to the left and right. Behind the screens beyond the beds, the Plate Glass diorama of mammals from Kashmir is visible, an enduring reminder of the gallery's original purpose, erected in 1896. The photograph features three individuals who played crucial roles in the hospital's operation. On the left is Dr Harry Worthington, the Medical Officer, dressed in his professional attire. Next to him is Mary Holmes, the Matron, who oversaw the nursing staff and managed the daily running of the hospital. Hilda Stone, a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) nurse, is seen attending to a patient with compassionate care and attention. The photograph was commissioned by Major Powell-Cotton from AH Siminson, a local Ramsgate photographer. The image bears Siminson's embossing stamp in the bottom right corner. Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919.
