EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the stern yet intellectual visage of Alexander Henderson (1583-1646), a towering figure in the history of Scottish Presbyterianism and diplomacy during the tumultuous reign of Charles I. Henderson's steadfast commitment to the cause of Scottish religious and political freedom earned him a place in the annals of Scottish history. Born in the Scottish Borders, Henderson studied at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow before embarking on a career in the Church of Scotland. He became a prominent figure in the Scottish Presbyterian movement, advocating for the reform of the Church and the establishment of a presbyterian system of government. In 1623, Henderson was appointed as a chaplain to King Charles I, a position he held until 1637. During this time, he served as a diplomat, representing Scottish interests at the English court and participating in negotiations with the English government over religious and political matters. However, Henderson's loyalty to the Scottish cause and his opposition to the English imposition of the Book of Common Prayer on Scotland led to his eventual exile in 1637. He played a key role in the Scottish National Covenant of 1638, which called for the defense of Scottish Presbyterianism and the reformation of the Church. Henderson's tireless efforts helped to galvanize the Scottish people and pave the way for the Scottish Revolution of 1639. Despite his advanced age, Henderson continued to be an active participant in the political and religious upheavals of the 1640s. He served as a commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, where he helped to draft the Westminster Confession of Faith, a foundational document of Presbyterian theology. Henderson's legacy as a Scottish Presbyterian divine, chaplain, and diplomat continues to be celebrated in Scotland and beyond, as a testament to the enduring power of faith and conviction in the face of adversity.
