1739 1820 Berkshire Depicted Fifteenth Howard Peer Peers Robes Suffolk 15th

EDITORS COMMENTS
15th Earl of Suffolk and 8th Earl of Berkshire, John Howard (1739-1820), is depicted in this striking portrait, dressed in the robes of a peer of the Realm. The portrait, created in 1806, captures the earl in the prime of his life, with a confident and regal bearing. John Howard was the eldest son of Henry Howard, 14th Earl of Suffolk, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Waldegrave. He succeeded his father in 1776 and held the titles of Earl of Suffolk and Baron Maltravers. Howard's political career began in earnest in 1768 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bury St. Edmunds. He rose to prominence under the patronage of the Duke of Grafton and served as a Lord of the Bedchamber to King George III. Howard's political views were largely Tory, and he was a vocal opponent of the American Revolution. Despite his political successes, Howard's personal life was marred by tragedy. In 1768, his wife, Lady Anne Brudenell, died just a few months after giving birth to their only son, who also died shortly thereafter. Howard never remarried. The portrait shows Howard wearing the ermine-trimmed robe and coronet of the Earl of Suffolk, as well as the coronet of the Earl of Berkshire. The background is adorned with the Howard family crest, a griffin holding a red rose in its claws. The portrait is a testament to Howard's noble lineage and his position as one of the most prominent peers of the realm during the late 18th century. John Howard's legacy extends beyond his political career and personal tragedies. He was a generous patron of the arts and supported various charitable causes throughout his life. He is also remembered for his role in the construction of the Howard family seat, Houghton Hall, which was expanded during his tenure as earl. Today, Houghton Hall is a popular tourist destination and a reminder of the rich history of the Howard family and the Earls of Suffolk.
