This print titled "South East Corner Tangier 1669-73" takes us back in time to the bustling city of Tangier during the late 17th century. The etching, belonging to the second state, showcases a sheet trimmed irregularly and measures approximately 4 15/16 by 8 9/16 inches (12.5 by 21.7 cm). The artist behind this masterpiece is Wenceslaus Hollar, a renowned Bohemian printmaker born in Prague in 1607 and later settled in London until his passing in 1677. This particular artwork is part of his series called "Tangier Views" which consists of five plates depicting various scenes from the city. In this specific image, we are transported to the south east corner of Tangier where we can admire its picturesque bay and catch a glimpse of York Castle on our left. In the distance, we can see Gibraltar and the Spanish coast adding depth to this stunning landscape. As our eyes wander through this historic depiction, three figures capture our attention as they stand amidst their surroundings.
