EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking Abruzzo Chieti Lanciano S. Maria del Ponte Cathedral, a true testament to Italy's rich visual history. Dating back to the 15th century, this magnificent cathedral seamlessly incorporates Diocletian's bridge into its structure, adding an intriguing historical element. During extensive renovations from 1785-88, the Cathedral underwent a remarkable transformation, resulting in a Baroque-Neoclassical facade and interior that exude grandeur and elegance. The exterior of the church and the bridge are captured beautifully in this image, offering a glimpse into their architectural splendor. Stepping inside reveals even more treasures within. The nave and cupola, both restored during the same period as the renovation works, impress visitors with their stunning craftsmanship. Adorning the high altar are sculptural figures that add depth and beauty to this sacred space. Notably, there is a sculpture of Madonna del Ponte dating all the way back to the 14th century. The walls come alive with vibrant frescoes depicting various scenes such as the four evangelists in pendentives of the cupola or significant moments like The Last Supper and saints being stoned to death. These exquisite paintings were created during the 18th century. What makes this cathedral truly unique is its integration around an ancient bridge believed to have been built by Diocletian himself in Roman times. Renovated around 1000 AD, it serves as a fascinating reminder of Lanciano's deep-rooted history. This print encapsulates not just an architectural marvel but also offers glimpses into centuries-old artistry that continues to inspire awe today.
