EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and history of the former Burton store in North Shields. Located on Saville Street West, this iconic building stands tall, its windows gazing down upon passersby with a sense of timeless elegance. Constructed around 1939, this store replaced an earlier establishment that once occupied the same site. A foundation stone was laid by Arnold James Burton himself, adding a touch of personal significance to its rich heritage. The architectural details are striking; from the sturdy granite exterior to the intricate transom windows adorning both the first and second floors. In more recent years, this historic building found new purpose as it became home to Age UK's Bradbury Centre. Serving as a hub for charitable endeavors, it continued to be a place where community spirit thrived within these walls. The image showcases not only the physical structure but also hints at the stories held within its walls - tales of fashion trends and tailoring expertise that were once synonymous with Burton menswear. The fascia proudly displays their name alongside other notable features such as faience accents and chain of merit awards. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot has expertly captured this piece of North Tyneside's history through his lens, preserving its beauty for future generations to admire and appreciate.
