Turret of ruined building, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Turret of ruined building, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of a turret from a ruined building, dating back to around 1950. The talented creator behind this masterpiece is Shirley Markham, an artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the prestigious Central School of Art in London during the early 1950s. Under the guidance of renowned writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake, Markham honed her skills and developed a unique style influenced by British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Markham's artistic journey took her to Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome where she sketched classical buildings that inspired her work. Despite graduating with great promise as a graphic designer and illustrator, societal expectations for middle-class women in the late 1950s led Markham to abandon her career after getting married in 1957. Sadly lacking confidence to return to illustration despite her evident talent, Markham's portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic for many years. Now finally unveiled for all to appreciate, this collection showcases Markham's exceptional talent through book illustrations, comic cartoons, menus, and programs. This particular print serves as a poignant reminder of both Markham's skillful artistry and the limitations placed upon women during that era. With its rich history and newfound recognition today, this remarkable piece allows us to delve into Shirley Markham's world for the first time since its creation over half a century ago.
