Track of Journey from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier - June 27th to August 1st 1911, (1913)

Track of Journey from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier - June 27th to August 1st 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the track of an extraordinary journey undertaken by Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team during their final expedition to the Antarctic. The image, titled "Track of Journey from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier - June 27th to August 1st 1911" offers a glimpse into the heroic efforts made by these brave explorers. In 1910, Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse group of scientists and experts. Their mission was twofold: to conduct scientific research in Antarctica and to be the first humans to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they were devastated to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there. Tragically, Scott's team faced numerous challenges on their return journey due to blizzards and dwindling supplies. By March, they succumbed to exhaustion and extreme conditions. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies and diaries were discovered. The photograph is taken from Volume II of "Scotts Last Expedition" published in London in 1913 by Smith, Elder & Co. , offering a poignant visual reminder of this ill-fated adventure. It serves as a testament not only to Captain Scott's determination but also highlights the sacrifices made by all members of his team who courageously pushed themselves beyond human limits in pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration.
