Todi Ragini, from a Ragamala Series, c. 1750-1775. Creator: Unknown
Todi Ragini, from a Ragamala Series, c. 1750-1775. In the ragamala system, male ragas are married to female raginis. Todi Ragini is a " wife" of Hindola Raga, the name of a scene that features the male lover or lovers on a swing. Both Todi and Hindola are meant to explore the moods of springtime. Ragamala verses describe Todi as a woman with sharp eyes and a slim " extremely tender body, radiant as the frost" and smeared with saffron and camphor from Kashmir. She is said to " push back a deer from the edge of a forest glade."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Todi Ragini, part of a Ragamala Series created between 1750 and 1775. The anonymous creator skillfully depicts the essence of this musical composition within the ragamala system, where male ragas are symbolically married to female raginis. Todi Ragini is portrayed as a wife to Hindola Raga, capturing a scene that features male lovers on a swing. Both Todi and Hindola aim to evoke the emotions and moods associated with springtime. Described in traditional verses, Todi is depicted as a woman with sharp eyes and an extremely tender body that radiates like frost. Her beauty is enhanced by saffron and camphor from Kashmir, giving her an ethereal glow. The painting itself belongs to the 18th century Bundi or Uniara style from Northwestern India's Rajasthan region. Created using opaque watercolor with gold accents on paper, it exemplifies the rich artistic heritage of this area. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this masterpiece remains attributed to an unknown artist who has beautifully captured the grace and allure of Todi Ragini. This print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate its intricate details while immersing themselves in Indian classical music's enchanting world.
