Springbok Hunting in South Africa, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Springbok Hunting in South Africa, 1850. The Springbok, or Bontebok {Antilope euchore)...is a most magnificent animal, larger than the gazelle, equalling...the speed of the fastest race-horse, and requiring the hardest riding and most intimate knowledge of its ways to enable the sportsman to get a fair shot...the sportsman, having dismounted, is taking a second shot at a wounded animal. His cap is decorated with ostrich-feathers; the horse is quite exhausted with the long chase. To the left is the cart which carries the game; and in the background several ostriches are scampering off...When pursued, Springboks frequently take an extraordinary bound (hence their name), rising with curved or elevated backs high into the air, generally to the height of eight feet, and appearing as if about to take flight'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Springbok Hunting in South Africa, 1850: A Thrilling Pursuit of the Magnificent Antelope This photograph print, created in 1850 by an unknown artist, presents a thrilling scene of Springbok hunting in South Africa during the Victorian era. The Springbok, or Antidorcas marsicana, is a magnificent antelope species native to Africa, larger than the gazelle and known for its remarkable agility and speed, making it a formidable quarry for hunters. The intrepid sportsman in the image, dressed in the height of 19th-century fashion, has dismounted from his horse and is taking a second shot at a wounded Springbok. His cap is adorned with ostrich feathers, a common accessory for hunters in the region. The horse, exhausted from the long chase, stands still, its breath heavy with exertion. To the left, a cart carries the game, while ostriches, Africa's largest flightless bird, scamper off in the background. When pursued, Springboks frequently leap high into the air, giving the appearance of flight, a behavior that earned them their name. This engraving, originally published in the Illustrated London News, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the thrill of the hunt, the clothing and equipment of the time, and the unique wildlife of the African savannah.
