A Seated Shepherdess, 1800s. Creator: Jules Dupre (French, 1811-1889)
A Seated Shepherdess, 1800s. One of the most influential landscape painters of the 1830s, Dupre was among the leaders of the Barbizon school, a group of artists who painted the landscape and rural subjects in and around the Forest of Fontainebleau, about 40 miles southeast of Paris. He frequently made drawings in black chalk heightened with white chalk or pastel on tan or brown paper, as seen here. Dupres special interest in atmospheric conditions is apparent in the luminosity of the sky and the reflected light on the surrounding landscape

A Seated Shepherdess, 1800s
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Jules Dupre, one of the most influential landscape painters of the 1830s. As a prominent member of the Barbizon school, Dupre was known for his ability to beautifully capture rural subjects and landscapes in and around the Forest of Fontainebleau. In this particular artwork, Dupre's expertise in depicting atmospheric conditions shines through. The luminosity of the sky creates an ethereal backdrop against which the seated shepherdess takes center stage. Her presence exudes tranquility and serenity as she rests amidst nature's beauty. Dupre's choice to use black chalk with white heightening and white pastel on brown paper adds depth and texture to the drawing. It enhances both light and shadow, allowing viewers to appreciate not only the figure but also every intricate detail present in the surrounding landscape. This stunning piece exemplifies Dupre's mastery in capturing not just physical forms but also emotions evoked by natural surroundings. With each stroke, he transports us into a world where we can almost feel gentle breezes rustling through leaves or hear distant sounds echoing across vast fields. As part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print serves as a testament to Jules Dupre's enduring legacy as a French artist who left an indelible mark on landscape painting during the 19th century.
