Schonhuts Butchers, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1955. Artist: Michael Walters
Schonhuts Butchers, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1955. In this photograph, Mr George Schonhut can be seen at work. He was the grandson of the founder, who relocated from the German town of Obernhof. The family settled in Mexborough in the years prior to World War I. Despite some persecution stemming from the German origins of his name, Mr Schonhut refused to anglicise the family name. The butchery business flourished for three generations as both retailers and as a wholesaler to other businesses in the area. It is assumed that his colleague with the artificial arms did not lose his limbs during the course of his work

Schonhuts Butchers, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1955: A Glimpse into a Family Legacy". In this photograph captured by artist Michael Walters in 1955, we are transported back to the bustling Schonhuts Butchers shop in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The focal point of the image is Mr George Schonhut himself - a hardworking man dedicated to upholding his family's butchery business. The story behind this iconic establishment dates back to its founder who bravely relocated from Obernhof, Germany. Despite facing persecution due to their German origins during World War I, the Schonhut family settled in Mexborough with unwavering determination. Refusing to anglicise their name despite adversity, they flourished as both retailers and wholesalers for three generations. As we observe Mr George Schonhut at work alongside his colleague with artificial arms (whose limb loss remains shrouded in mystery), we witness the essence of dedication and resilience that defined these men. Their expertise and commitment contributed not only to the success of their own business but also supported other local establishments within the thriving food industry. This photograph serves as a testament to an era when small businesses played an integral role in shaping communities across Britain. It encapsulates not just a moment frozen in time but also represents countless untold stories of hardworking individuals like Mr George Schonhut who were instrumental in building our country's heritage.
