Saint-Honorat, Pres dArles, 1853. Creator: Edouard Baldus (French, 1813-1889)
Saint-Honorat, Pres dArles, 1853. Two years after his initial photographic trip to Provence, Baldus returned in 1853 to again document some of the regions most imposing classical and medieval architectural monuments. His genius both as an architectural photographer and as a printer is easily witnessed in this extraordinary photograph taken in Arles. It depicts an ancient cemetery, the Alyscamps, in the foreground, with the unfinished Romanesque Church of Saint Honorat, dominated by its distinctive two-story bell tower, in the background. On this photographic campaign, this image was the rare occasion when Baldus succeeded in his desire to combine a picturesque aesthetic with an interest in the medieval past. Thirty-five years later, in the fall of 1888, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh made several paintings of the Alyscamps. Dudley P. Allen Fund 2009.5

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Saint-Honorat, Pres d'Arles, 1853" showcases the remarkable talent of Edouard Baldus, a renowned French photographer. Returning to Provence two years after his initial photographic trip, Baldus aimed to capture the grandeur of classical and medieval architectural monuments in the region. This particular image taken in Arles exemplifies his mastery as both an architectural photographer and printer. The photograph portrays an ancient cemetery known as Alyscamps in the foreground, while the unfinished Romanesque Church of Saint Honorat stands prominently in the background with its distinctive two-story bell tower. It is a rare instance where Baldus successfully combines a picturesque aesthetic with an appreciation for medieval history. Interestingly, thirty-five years later in 1888, artists Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh were inspired by this very location and created several paintings depicting Alyscamps. The influence of this serene setting on these renowned painters further emphasizes its timeless beauty. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art through the Dudley P. Allen Fund since 2009 (accession number 2009.5), this salt print from a waxed paper negative showcases Édouard Baldus' exceptional skill and contribution to French heritage art during the 19th century. This stunning piece serves as a testament to Baldus' ability to capture not only architectural marvels but also evoke emotions through his photography.
