EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from Roman Britain, specifically a wooden writing tablet discovered in Vindolanda. Dating back to the late 1st or early 2nd century, this ancient piece of history holds an intriguing party invitation written by Claudia Severa to Sulpicia Lepidina. Lepidina was no ordinary woman; she was the esteemed wife of Flavius Cerealis, prefect of the Ninth Cohort of Batavians. The significance of this invitation lies not only in its purpose but also in the handwriting itself. It is believed that Claudia Severa's penmanship represents one of the earliest known examples of Latin writing by a woman. This discovery sheds light on women's literacy and involvement in social events during that time period. Preserved within the British Museum's collection, this artifact offers us a glimpse into Roman society and customs. The delicate wood and faded ink tell stories of celebrations held centuries ago, reminding us that human connection through invitations and gatherings transcends time. As we admire this photograph, let us appreciate the rich history it encapsulates - from marriage alliances to gender roles - all captured within these few square centimeters. It serves as a testament to our shared humanity and reminds us that even amidst vast cultural differences, there are threads connecting us throughout history.
