EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable reliquary from the early 13th century. Created by Js Goepel in 1881, this etching beautifully captures the intricate details of a silver-gilt and rock crystal reliquary made in France by Hugo d'Oignies, a lay brother at Oignies Priory. The front of this exquisite artifact is adorned with delicate filigree-work set with colored pastes, adding to its allure. The copper gilt foot, dating from the late 13th century, was attached more recently but still complements the overall design flawlessly. Featured in "The South Kensington Museum" an esteemed book of engraved illustrations and descriptions of art collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum), this relic offers a glimpse into medieval craftsmanship and religious devotion. Hugo d'Oignies' mastery shines through every detail of this reliquary. Its Mosan art influences are evident in its meticulous metalwork and gilded accents. This artifact serves as a testament to both artistic style and Christian faith during that era. Preserved for centuries, this relic now resides within the walls of the Victoria & Albert Museum, where visitors can marvel at its beauty firsthand. Thanks to Js Goepel's skillful etching technique captured in this print, admirers can appreciate every intricacy even if they cannot physically be present before it.
