Radha and Krishna meet in the forest during a storm, c. 1770. Creator: Unknown

Radha and Krishna meet in the forest during a storm, c. 1770. This painting depicts the Hindu deity Krishna as a youth among the villagers of the cowherding community where he grew up. Drawn to him, the women hurry to hold a coverlet over him in protection from the rain, not realizing that he is able to lift a mountain to shield them all. Birds and monkeys populate the trees, and a Hindu temple and palace buildings stand in the background. This vibrant work was probably made for an aristocratic Hindu ruler of territories in eastern India during the period when Mughal artists dispersed from the imperial center after the invasion of Delhi in 1739

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this painting, titled "Radha and Krishna meet in the forest during a storm" we are transported to a mystical world of love and devotion. Created around 1770 by an unknown artist, this vibrant artwork depicts the Hindu deity Krishna as a young boy amidst his cowherding community. As dark clouds gather in the sky, rain pours down upon the lush forest where Radha and Krishna have chanced upon each other. Unaware of his divine powers, the women from the village rush to protect Krishna from getting wet by holding a coverlet over him. Little do they know that he possesses unimaginable strength - capable of lifting mountains to shield them all. The scene is alive with activity; birds chirp melodiously while monkeys playfully swing from tree branches. In the distance, we catch glimpses of a magnificent Hindu temple and palace buildings standing tall against the stormy backdrop. This exquisite painting was likely commissioned for an aristocratic Hindu ruler in eastern India during a time when Mughal artists dispersed after Delhi's invasion in 1739. The use of opaque watercolour with gold accents on paper creates an ethereal effect that adds depth and richness to every detail. Now housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this masterpiece showcases not only exceptional artistic skill but also captures timeless themes of love, protection, and divinity within Indian culture. It serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with mythology and spirituality across centuries.
