EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history, showcasing Prince and Princess Ito of Japan along with their family in 1909. The esteemed artist Herbert Ponting beautifully portrays the elegance and traditional attire of the Japanese royal family. Prince Ito Hirobumi, an influential statesman, had a remarkable career as he served as prime minister four times between 1885 and 1901. Educated both in Japan and Britain, his political prowess was widely recognized. Additionally, he held the position of Resident-General of Korea after the Russo-Japanese War when Korea became a Japanese protectorate. Tragically, this photograph holds deeper significance as it was taken shortly before Prince Ito's assassination on October 26th that same year. An Jung-geun, a Korean nationalist seeking independence from Japan, committed this crime in Harbin, Manchuria. The image showcases not only the political figures but also highlights the importance of family within Japanese culture. The princess is depicted wearing a beautiful kimono while surrounded by her children. This portrait provides us with insight into their personal lives amidst their public roles. Herbert Ponting's artistic talent shines through this monochrome masterpiece as he expertly captures every detail - from clothing to facial expressions - bringing life to this historical moment frozen in time. It serves as a poignant reminder of both joyous occasions and tragic events that shape our world's history.
