The Pretty Bar Maid, c1780-1825. Creator: Thomas Rowlandson

The Pretty Bar Maid, c1780-1825. In Rowlandsons work, on the one hand, there is a delicate delineation of exaggerated commonplaceness and, on the other, sensitive realism. Alteration, distortion, and enlargement of feature and body are often employed beyond reason, but in the hands of Rowlandson there seems to be an unseen force to indicate the limits to which he could go - to however eccentric, grotesque, or fanciful lengths his imagination might lead him. His characters seem true to type; he was able to animate them, whether they were humorous, frivolous, ironic, or bitter. From " The Watercolour Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson from the Albert H. Wiggin Collection in the Boston Public Library" with commentary by Arthur W. Heintzelman. [Watson-Guptill Publications, Inc. New York, 1947]

The Pretty Bar Maid, c1780-1825

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Thomas Rowlandson captures the essence of 18th and 19th-century British pub culture with its delicate delineation of exaggerated commonplaceness and sensitive realism. In this whimsical artwork, Rowlandson showcases his mastery in altering, distorting, and enlarging features to create eccentric yet captivating characters. The bar maid at the center of the print is a true embodiment of Rowlandson's talent. With her plump figure and rosy cheeks, she exudes warmth and hospitality as she serves drinks to customers in a bustling tavern. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke; from the intricate patterns on her dress to the carefully rendered expressions on each face around her. Rowlandson's ability to animate his subjects shines through as he brings humor, irony, and bitterness into play within this scene. The patrons range from humorous jesters engaging in lively conversation to somber figures lost deep in thought. Meanwhile, dogs roam freely under tables or eagerly await scraps from generous customers. This watercolor drawing not only captures a specific moment but also provides insight into an entire era. It transports us back to a time when pubs were vibrant social hubs where people from all walks of life gathered for camaraderie over pints of beer or bowls of punch. "The Pretty Bar Maid" stands as a testament to Thomas Rowlandson's artistic genius and his ability to capture both reality and imagination within one frame.
