EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sir Joshua Reynolds' "Portrait of Two Gentlemen" from 1778, which was later reproduced in 1912. The painting, housed in the esteemed Tate Gallery in London, depicts two distinguished figures: Mr Huddesford and Mr Bampfylde. George Huddesford, a talented painter and pupil of Reynolds himself, is elegantly dressed in a black silk van Dyck costume. On the other hand, John Bampfylde's story takes a tragic turn as he fell madly in love with Reynolds' niece but faced rejection that left him mentally unstable. Sir Joshua Reynolds was not only an accomplished artist but also played a significant role in promoting the "Grand Style" of painting during his time. As the founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, he held great influence within the art world. Additionally, Reynolds served as Principal Painter to the king. His masterpieces can be found adorning galleries and museums worldwide due to their timeless beauty and artistic prowess. This particular illustration comes from Samuel Levy Bensusan's book titled "Reynolds - Masterpieces in Colour" published by TC & EC Jack and Frederick A Stokes Co around 1912. The print captures both the elegance of Reynolds' portraiture style and provides insight into the lives of these intriguing gentlemen who were immortalized on canvas centuries ago.
