Poem, first half 19th century. Creator: Kaioku Nukina (Japanese, 1778-1863)
Poem, first half 19th century. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of art titled "Poem, first half 19th century" created by the talented Japanese artist Kaioku Nukina (1778-1863). The artwork belongs to the Nanga, or "Southern School" painters who were deeply influenced by Chinese culture during the 17th and 18th centuries in Japan. Reflecting the prevailing Japanese fascination with imported Chinese objects and knowledge, these painters incorporated similar subjects and styles into their work. The image reveals a common practice among Nanga artists - exchanging small paintings and calligraphies. Additionally, they commemorated special gatherings of fellow artists by creating individual sheets that were later compiled into albums. The displayed sheets are part of one such gathering. Executed on ivory silk using ink, this exquisite painting exemplifies the refined craftsmanship characteristic of the Edo period (1615-1868) in Japan. It is housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art as part of its esteemed collection. Through this photograph, Heritage Art/Heritage Images invites us to appreciate Kaioku Nukina's mastery in capturing both traditional Japanese aesthetics and influences from Chinese art. This visually stunning print not only serves as a testament to artistic exchange but also offers a glimpse into an era where cultural interplay thrived within creative circles.
