Peregrine Falcons (Duck Hawks), c. 1827. Creator: John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851)

Peregrine Falcons (Duck Hawks), c. 1827. Combining his interests in nature and art, Audubon sought to depict every species of native North American birds posed in action with elements of their habitats. His efforts resulted in the four-volume publication The Birds of America, which contains more than 435 hand-coloured engravings after his watercolour renderings. Occasionally the artist, sometimes with the help of assistants, made oil versions of his watercolours, of which this image of two falcons feasting on fresh duck carcasses is an early and especially lively example

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable painting by John James Audubon, an American artist and naturalist who dedicated his life to capturing the beauty of North American birds. In this particular piece titled "Peregrine Falcons (Duck Hawks)", created around 1827, Audubon skillfully combines his passion for nature and art. Audubon's ambitious goal was to depict every species of native North American birds in action within their natural habitats. His dedication led him to create The Birds of America, a four-volume publication containing over 435 hand-colored engravings based on his watercolor renderings. However, he also ventured into oil paintings occasionally with the assistance of his assistants. The image presented here is one such early example of Audubon's oil version paintings. It portrays two peregrine falcons feasting on fresh duck carcasses, showcasing both the artist's technical prowess and his ability to capture the dynamic energy of these magnificent creatures. Displayed on canvas, this artwork exemplifies Audubon's commitment to preserving the avian world through visual storytelling. Its vibrant colors and lively composition bring forth a sense of awe and admiration for these majestic raptors in their natural habitat. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print allows us to appreciate not only Audubon's artistic talent but also his significant contribution as a chronicler of America's rich birdlife during the 19th century.
