EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic ocean liner, RMS Queen Mary, in all her glory. Built by John Brown & Company on Clydeside for the Cunard White Star Line, this massive 81,000-ton vessel was launched in 1934 from Clydebank, Glasgow. At that time, she held the prestigious title of being the largest ocean liner in the world. The Queen Mary's impressive presence dominated the transatlantic route alongside her sister ship, the Queen Elizabeth. With exception to a brief period serving as a troopship during World War II, she reigned supreme until her retirement from service in 1967. Since then, this magnificent ship has found new life as a hotel and popular tourist attraction moored at Long Beach, California. In this aerial view captured by artist Sir John AR Marriott for A Concise History of the World publication (Associated Newspapers Ltd. , 1935), we see the grandeur of this iconic vessel. The image highlights its sleek design with multiple decks and towering funnels against a backdrop of vast open sea. This print not only commemorates an engineering marvel but also pays homage to Scotland's rich shipbuilding industry and maritime heritage. It serves as a reminder of an era when these great liners ruled over oceans and symbolizes human ambition and innovation in transportation history.
