The new National Theatre, Lisbon, 1845. Creator: Unknown

The new National Theatre, Lisbon, 1845. This splendid National Theatre, unquestionably one of the very finest in Europe, was opened on...King Fernandos birthday...It is the work of Senhor [Fortunato] Lodi, a Portuguese architect of distinguished social position...The traditional Peninsular balconies, both singly attached to separate windows and extending the whole length of the house, may be seen both to the right and left; and an inkling may be caught of the primitive lamps and street-posts, which are by no means, however, divested either of grace or local colouring. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent new National Theatre in Lisbon, Portugal, which was unveiled to the public on King Fernando's birthday in 1845. The creator of this architectural masterpiece remains unknown, but its grandeur speaks volumes about the talent behind it. Designed by Senhor Fortunato Lodi, a highly esteemed Portuguese architect with an elevated social standing, this neo-classical gem stands as one of Europe's most remarkable theatres. Its exterior boasts traditional Peninsular balconies that adorn both sides of the building – some attached to individual windows while others stretch along its entire length. Even from this engraving captured in the 19th century edition of "Illustrated London News" one can catch a glimpse of the charming primitive lamps and street-posts that add grace and local character to its surroundings. The image captures not only the architectural beauty but also includes a gentleman standing nearby, adding human presence to this historical moment frozen in time. This Victorian-era photograph provides us with a rare glimpse into Lisbon's cultural landscape during that period. Preserved by The Print Collector and made available through Heritage Images, this stunning piece offers art enthusiasts, historians, and architecture aficionados alike an opportunity to appreciate neoclassical design at its finest.
