EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting ruins of Netley Abbey in 1776, as depicted by artist Richard Godfrey. Nestled in the picturesque village of Netley near Southampton, Hampshire, this late medieval monastery was established in 1239 by the Bishop of Winchester for Roman Catholic monks following the austere Cistercian order. The image showcases two gentlemen exploring the ruined south transept, which held great significance due to its now-collapsed high vault. The abbey's remains served as a profound source of inspiration for Romantic writers and poets during that era. Netley Abbey stands today as southern England's most complete surviving Cistercian monastery. Godfrey's engraving beautifully portrays the architectural features of this 18th-century structure amidst an overgrown landscape adorned with ivy. Its monochrome depiction enhances a sense of nostalgia and adds to its romantic allure. Published on June 1st, 1776 by F. Blyth, this print transports us back to a time when nature intertwined with religion and history within these ancient walls. It invites viewers to contemplate both the grandeur and fragility inherent in human creations throughout centuries past. This print from Heritage Images allows us to appreciate not only Godfrey's artistic talent but also offers a glimpse into British history, architecture, and religious heritage during the Middle Ages.
