EDITORS COMMENTS
Nebuchadnezzar II, King of Babylon, is depicted in this engraving by Philip Galle in a moment of awe and wonder as he witnesses the miraculous survival of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. This scene is taken from the biblical story found in the Book of Daniel (3:19-27), where the three Jewish men refused to bow down to the golden image of King Nebuchadnezzar and were consequently cast into the burning furnace. The king, who had ordered the execution of the three men, was astonished to find them unharmed, with a fourth figure, believed to be an angel, in the furnace with them. This print is part of a series of engravings by Philip Galle, titled 'The Story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,' published in the late 16th century. The series was produced during the Counter-Reformation period, a time when the Catholic Church was promoting the use of religious imagery to strengthen faith and reinforce doctrines. This print, with its powerful symbolism and dramatic composition, would have been a popular and effective means of conveying the miraculous story to a wide audience. The image is striking for its contrasts: the fiery furnace, the dark background, and the white-hot figures of the three Jews and the angel, all set against the black and white contrast of the engraving itself. The flowing robes of Nebuchadnezzar and the three Jews add a sense of movement and dynamism to the image, while the king's expression of wonder and amazement underscores the miraculous nature of the event. This print is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and is a testament to the enduring power of religious imagery to inspire and captivate audiences across centuries and cultures.
