EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Napoleon Bonaparte's surrender and subsequent exile aboard the HMS Bellerophon in 1815. Following his defeat at Waterloo and a failed escape attempt to the United States, Napoleon surrendered to Captain Maitland on July 15th. The image captures the moment of embarkation onto the Bellerophon, as it transported him from Plymouth harbor to his final destination of St Helena. The color plate, taken from the book "Pictures of English History" published by George Routledge And Sons in the mid-19th century, depicts this significant historical event with great detail. The composition highlights the imposing presence of both Napoleon and the warship itself against a backdrop of sea and sky. As one gazes upon this print, they are reminded of Napoleon's fall from power and his captivity as a prisoner. The red ensign flag flying atop the ship symbolizes Britain's triumph over its formidable enemy. This image serves as a reminder not only of Napoleon's fate but also reflects upon themes such as crime, imprisonment, warfare, and surrender. Napoleon Bonaparte I is portrayed here with an air of resilience despite his circumstances. His stoic expression hints at his determination even in defeat. This print allows us to witness history through artistry—a visual testament to one man's rise and fall that forever altered Europe's political landscape during the early 19th century.
