EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty and regal presence of Mary, Queen of Scots. Painted by the talented artist Alexander K MacDonald in 1937, this portrait captures the essence of a woman who held immense power and faced great turmoil throughout her life. Mary, Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, ruled over Scotland from 1542 to 1567 and briefly served as queen consort of France. A first cousin once removed to Queen Elizabeth I of England, she had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own. This contentious rivalry ultimately led to her tragic demise in 1587 when Elizabeth ordered her execution after eighteen and a half years of imprisonment. The image itself is derived from an original drawing by A. K. Macdonald and belongs to the renowned John Player & Sons cigarette card series titled Famous Beauties from 1937. In this portrayal, Mary exudes elegance with her intricate dress adorned with rich colors that reflect the fashion trends prevalent during the sixteenth century. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are transported back in time to witness the grace and strength embodied by one of history's most iconic queens. The lion depicted beside Mary symbolizes both her royal lineage and fierce determination amidst adversity. This print serves as a testament to Mary's enduring legacy—a woman whose story continues to captivate audiences centuries later.
