EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Marshal Jean-Baptiste-Jules Bernadotte, a prominent figure in European history. Born as Jean Bernadotte in 1763, he rose through the ranks of the French Army and was appointed Marshal of France by Napoleon Bonaparte himself. In 1806, Napoleon also bestowed upon him the title of Prince of Pontecorvo. The artist T Johnson beautifully captures Bernadotte's regal presence and military prowess in this engraving, which is based on a painting by Francois Kinson. The original painting, commissioned by Napoleon for the Hall of the Marshals at Tuileries Palace in Paris, unfortunately perished during the tragic events of the Paris Commune in 1871. However, this print allows us to admire Bernadotte's full-length portrait once again. It is worth noting that after his adoption into Swedish nobility in 1818, he assumed the name Carl and became King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Charles III John of Norway. Bernadotte's remarkable journey from a French general to becoming one of Scandinavia's most influential monarchs makes him an intriguing historical figure. This print serves as a testament to his significant contributions to both France and Sweden-Norway during a transformative period in European history.
