Marriage of Adam and Eve, 1555. Creator: Jean Duvet (French, 1485-1561)

Marriage of Adam and Eve, 1555. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Marriage of Adam and Eve" created by Jean Duvet in 1555. Part of a bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation, this particular engraving is considered Duvet's greatest artistic achievement. Only seven complete sets are known to exist, making this print a rare gem housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Jean Duvet, an influential French printmaker and one of the most original artists of his time, was deeply inspired by Italian art. Despite working primarily in Langres, he incorporated elements from Italian High Renaissance prints into his work. His mastery is evident in the solidly modeled human figures depicted in this piece. Duvet's style can be described as idiosyncratic and highly artificial, with crowded compositions that prioritize ornamental surface patterns over rational space. This distinctive approach adds depth and complexity to his artwork. The Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection proudly presents this 16th-century engraving capturing Jean Duvet's brilliance. It serves as a testament to his innovative techniques and enduring legacy within French art history.
