EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artifact of great significance - a letter from Sir Philip Sidney to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, dated 2nd February 1586. The letter was written by the talented poet, courtier, and soldier while he was stationed in Bergen. In this heartfelt correspondence, Sidney expresses his grievances about the mistreatment he faced at the hands of the Boors of Sommelsdijk. He pleads for either suitable accommodations or necessary provisions to be sent to Bergen. The context surrounding this letter adds even more depth to its importance. At the time of writing, Sidney had been appointed as Governor of Flushing and Colonel of the Zeeland Regiment of Horse. His dedication and burning desire to serve his country shine through in these words. Tragically, Sir Philip Sidney's life was cut short due to a wound sustained during battle at Zutphen on 22nd September 1586. His untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of his bravery and commitment to duty. Preserved within this print is not only an exquisite example of calligraphy but also a glimpse into an extraordinary era in English history. It allows us to connect with these legendary figures - Sir Philip Sidney and Robert Dudley - who played significant roles during Queen Elizabeth I's reign. This remarkable piece from Heritage Images invites us into their world, capturing both the beauty and fragility inherent in our shared human experience throughout history.
