John Gilpin gallops through a village, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott

John Gilpin gallops through a village, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpin, with wine bottles attached to his belt, clings on as his horse tears down the road chased by dogs and scattering geese. The turnpike-man, thinking its a race, has opened the gate. John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "John Gilpin gallops through a village" captures the chaotic scene of an iconic moment from William Cowper's comic ballad. Created by Randolph Caldecott in 1878 and reprinted around 1918, this image brings to life the humorous tale of John Gilpin's wild horse ride. In the picture, we see John Gilpin desperately clinging onto his horse as it tears down the road with wine bottles attached to his belt. Dogs chase after them while geese scatter in panic. The turnpike-man, mistaking their frenzy for a race, has opened the gate further adding to the chaos. The story behind this image is based on a real-life character who found himself separated from his family during a journey gone awry. Instead of reaching Edmonton as planned, he ended up ten miles away in Ware due to losing control of his horse. Caldecott skillfully captures both the humor and excitement of this event through vibrant colors and dynamic composition. This print not only showcases Caldecott's artistic talent but also pays homage to Cowper's timeless ballad that continues to entertain audiences even centuries later. With its rich historical context and whimsical depiction, this print serves as a delightful reminder of British countryside life in the eighteenth century. It encapsulates themes such as fear, alarm, and out-of-control situations while showcasing Caldecott's unique style that blends humor with artistry.
