EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern yet dignified face of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America from 1855 to 1865. Taken in 1955, this image showcases Davis as a prominent leader during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history - the Civil War. After Mississippi seceded from the Union in January 1861, Davis resigned from his position in the US Senate and was appointed provisional President by a constitutional convention. His inauguration took place at Alabama State Capitol later that same year. This portrait reflects his authority and determination as he navigated through these challenging times. However, despite his leadership skills, Davis faced defeat when he was captured by Union cavalry forces in 1865 and subsequently imprisoned for two years. This photograph serves as a reminder of both his rise to power and ultimate downfall. The image is part of Mathew Brady's collection titled "Historian with a Camera" curated by James D Horan. It offers viewers an intimate glimpse into an important figure who played a significant role in shaping American history during the nineteenth century. As we examine this portrait today, it prompts us to reflect on how leaders' actions can shape nations and reminds us never to forget our past struggles for unity amidst division.
