James I, King of Great Britain, 1816. Artist: Charles Turner
James I, King of Great Britain, 1816. James (1566-1625) became King of Scotland in 1567 and England in 1601. The son of Mary Queen of Scots, James VI of Scotland became the first of the Stuart monarchs on the English throne when Elizabeth I died in 1601. A Protestant, his policies towards Catholics led to the Gunpowder Plot, and his belief in the absolute power of the monarchy led to increasing friction with Parliament, which would culminate in civil war in the reign of his son and successor, Charles I. Culture, particularly literature, flourished during James reign, with the work of Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Francis Bacon particularly notable, as well as the production of the King James Bible. A print from Fifteen Splendid Portraits of Royal Personages, engraved in mezzotinto by Richard Earlom, Charles Turner and R Dunkarton, printed by J McCreery, Black Horse Court, Fleet Street, London, 1816

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases James I, King of Great Britain, in 1816. Painted by the talented artist Charles Turner, this portrait captures the essence of a monarch who played a significant role in shaping British history. James I's journey to the throne began when he became King of Scotland in 1567. Later on, he ascended to the English throne after Elizabeth I's death in 1601. As a Protestant ruler with strong beliefs in absolute monarchy, his policies towards Catholics sparked events like the infamous Gunpowder Plot. Despite these challenges, James I fostered an era of cultural prosperity during his reign. Literature flourished under his patronage, with renowned figures such as Shakespeare and Francis Bacon producing their most notable works. Additionally, James' support led to the creation of one of history's most influential texts—the King James Bible. This particular print is part of "Fifteen Splendid Portraits of Royal Personages" engraved by Richard Earlom and Charles Turner themselves. The mezzotinto technique used adds depth and texture to this stunning portrayal. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded not only of James I's complex legacy but also how art can preserve historical moments for generations to come.
