Born as the illegitimate son of Charles II and Lucy Walter, he became a pretender to the throne. The image captures his striking appearance with an elaborate dress, fashionable hairstyle, and confident demeanor. James embarked on a rebellion in 1685, claiming his rightful place as Charles' heir against King James II's Roman Catholic rule. However, his attempt to overthrow the king ended tragically at the Battle of Sedgmoor in Somerset on July 6th that year. Defeated by royal forces, James was subsequently beheaded on Tower Hill.
