The headgear at Clipstone Colliery, Nottinghamshire, 1963. Artist: Michael Walters

The headgear at Clipstone Colliery, Nottinghamshire, 1963. The original shafts of Clipstone Colliery in Mansfield were sunk in 1922 to give access to the top hard seam. In the 1950s the shafts were deepened to their current 920m depth to provide access to other seams. After its closure by British Coal in 1993, the colliery was reopened under the control of RJB Mining in April 1994 until it again ceased operations in 2003 after producing a further four million tonnes of coal

EDITORS COMMENTS
The headgear at Clipstone Colliery, Nottinghamshire, 1963. This print by artist Michael Walters takes us back to the heart of Britain's coal mining industry in the mid-20th century. The towering headgear stands as a symbol of resilience and hard work that defined the lives of countless miners. Clipstone Colliery, originally established in 1922, underwent significant expansion in the 1950s when its shafts were deepened to reach new seams. This engineering feat allowed access to previously untapped resources and sustained the region's coal production for decades to come. After its closure by British Coal in 1993, RJB Mining took over operations in April 1994 until it finally ceased operations in 2003. Throughout its existence, Clipstone Colliery produced an astounding four million tonnes of coal. The image captures not only the industrial nature of this site but also serves as a poignant reminder of the people who dedicated their lives to this demanding profession. The headdress worn by one miner adds a personal touch, representing both protection and tradition within this close-knit community. Michael Walters' photography beautifully encapsulates an era gone by - a testament to our nation's rich heritage and industrial legacy. It invites us to reflect on the immense contributions made by those who worked tirelessly underground, shaping our country's history.
