Head of a Young Woman, c. 1785. Creator: Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725-1805)
Head of a Young Woman, c. 1785. This female head relates to a finished drawing by Greuze called The Reconciliation, which shows the return of a husband to his wife after a domestic argument. The artist specialized in scenes of family life, depicted with high drama and theatrical gestures. From narrative scenes such as this, he would often make large red chalk drawings-close-ups in a sense-of the facial expressions of individual figures in the scene. This sheet relates to the head of the wife in The Reconciliation, who turns toward her husband entering at the right. Greuze created and sold such drawings as finished works of art. Like the drawing by Taraval on view nearby, and the sheets by Antoine Coypel and Edgar Degas also on view in this exhibition, this type of work is called an expressive head (tete dexpression), which has a rich tradition in French art

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, a renowned French artist from the 18th century. Titled "Head of a Young Woman" this piece is an intriguing glimpse into Greuze's mastery of capturing human emotions and dramatic scenes. The subject of this print is derived from one of Greuze's finished drawings called "The Reconciliation". This particular drawing depicts the poignant moment when a husband returns to his wife after a heated argument. Known for his expertise in portraying family life with theatrical gestures, Greuze often created detailed red chalk drawings that focused on individual facial expressions within narrative scenes. In this expressive head, we see the wife turning towards her husband as he enters from the right side. The intensity and emotion conveyed through her gaze are truly remarkable. It is worth noting that these expressive heads were not mere studies but rather complete works of art that Greuze would create and sell. Displayed alongside other notable artists' works in an exhibition at The Cleveland Museum of Art, including Taraval, Coypel, and Degas, this piece exemplifies the rich tradition of tete dexpression or expressive heads in French art. Through this print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, viewers can appreciate both the technical skill and emotional depth captured by Jean-Baptiste Greuze during his illustrious career as an artist.
