EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, capturing the foundation of Santiago de Cuba in the 1920s. The image showcases the exterior of this historic village, which was one of the first seven settlements established on the island of Cuba. Founded on July 25,1515, Santiago de Cuba holds great significance as it was named after Santiago Apostle, a warrior saint and patron from Spain. Diego Velazquez de Cuellar played a pivotal role in commanding this task as Lieutenant Governor. His responsibility included directing the conquest, colonization, and exploitation for both colonists and the Spanish crown. This cigar card from "The History of Cuba" series by Geografico Universal serves as a visual reminder of colonialism's impact on North and Central America. The monochrome landscape transports us to an era where water transport played a vital role in connecting villages like Santiago de Cuba with other parts of the country. The ships anchored along its coastal area symbolize trade and communication routes that were crucial for economic development during that time. As we admire this historical snapshot captured in the twenties, let us appreciate how far this vibrant city has come since its humble beginnings. Its rich heritage is beautifully preserved through prints like these - reminding us of our roots and celebrating our shared history.
