Fol. 341r, Daniel, historiated initial A, Daniel in the lions den, c. 1275-1300

Fol. 341r, Daniel, historiated initial A, Daniel in the lions den, c. 1275-1300. Biblical manuscripts were highly prized and important possessions of churches, monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities throughout medieval Europe. The biblical texts were known as the vulgate, the translations made by Saint Jerome in the fourth century from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, which became the definitive and official Latin version of the Roman Church. In the 13th century, the bible was, for the first time, produced as a single volume with an officially sanctioned sequence to its books and chapters as illustrated by this example. The very extensive decoration of this bible is arranged hierarchically to indicate the relative importance of the various texts so that full or almost full-page initials mark the openings of the first prologue, Genesis, and the first Gospel; historiated initials mark the beginning of each book and illuminated initials mark the Prologues

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Fol. 341r, Daniel, historiated initial A, Daniel in the lions den, dating back to the years between 1275 and 1300. In medieval Europe, biblical manuscripts held immense significance and were treasured possessions of churches, monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities. These manuscripts contained the vulgate texts - Saint Jerome's translations from Hebrew and Greek into Latin - which became the official version for the Roman Church. During the 13th century, a groundbreaking development occurred as bibles were produced as single volumes with an officially approved sequence of books and chapters. This particular example beautifully illustrates this new approach to bible production. The extensive decoration within this bible is arranged hierarchically to emphasize the relative importance of different texts. The opening pages are adorned with full or almost full-page initials that mark significant sections such as the first prologue, Genesis, and the first Gospel. Each book begins with historiated initials that depict scenes related to its content while illuminated initials grace various Prologues throughout. This print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images captures not only a stunning visual representation but also serves as a testament to the historical value placed on biblical manuscripts during medieval times. It offers us a glimpse into both religious devotion and artistic craftsmanship prevalent in that era.
