The First Consul, 1910

The First Consul. Napoleon Bonaparte, French general and Emperor. Napoleon (1769-1821) enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and began a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena. After a painting by Giuseppe Longhi (1766-1831). From the Connoisseur VOL. XXVII, 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The First Consul, 1910" featuring the iconic figure of Napoleon Bonaparte. Known for his remarkable military achievements and rise to power, Napoleon was a French general who eventually became Emperor. The image captures his profile in stunning color and detail, highlighting his regal presence. Napoleon's story is one of ambition and triumph, as he swiftly ascended through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799, he orchestrated a coup that overthrew the government and established himself as first consul, effectively becoming France's dictator. This marked the beginning of his reign as an influential leader. In 1804, Napoleon declared himself Emperor and embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. His victories at battles such as Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance over much of the continent. However, Napoleon's ambitious pursuits eventually led to his downfall. In 1812, he suffered a disastrous defeat during an invasion of Russia. Defeat at Leipzig in 1813 forced him to abdicate and be exiled to Elba. Although he managed to escape in 1815 and raise another army, he was ultimately defeated by Wellington at Waterloo before being exiled once again to St Helena. This exquisite portrait originated from a painting by Giuseppe Longhi (1766-1831) featured in Connoisseur VOL. XXVII back in 1910—a testament to its historical significance captured within this print collector's item.
