Esther before Ahasuerus, c. 1530. Creator: Dirk Vellert (Netherlandish, 1480 / 85-1547)
Esther before Ahasuerus, c. 1530. Though also a painter and printmaker, Dierick (or Dirk) Vellert is best known as a designer of stained glass. Active in Antwerp, where he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1511, Vellert richly ornamented his work with garlands, masks, vases, and other classically inspired motifs. A great deal of his glass was exported. As an engraver, his prints owe a good deal to Albrecht Durer and Luca van Leyden. These two panels depict famous incidents from the Old Testament featuring the rendering of judgment. Both may have originally been made for a council chamber or a court of justice. Conceivably, because of their subjects, they could have served as models of justice for the magistrates who deliberated within view of them

The print titled "Esther before Ahasuerus, c. 1530" captures the exquisite craftsmanship of Dirk Vellert, a renowned Netherlandish artist known for his stained glass designs. While Vellert's talent extended to painting and printmaking, it is his mastery in creating intricate stained glass pieces that earned him acclaim. Active in Antwerp during the early 16th century, Vellert's work was characterized by opulent embellishments inspired by classical motifs such as garlands, masks, and vases. His stained glass creations were highly sought after and often exported to various destinations. This particular print showcases two panels depicting significant moments from the Old Testament involving acts of judgment. It is believed that these panels may have originally been commissioned for a council chamber or court of justice. Their presence would have served as symbolic representations of justice for magistrates who deliberated within their view. The photograph highlights the delicate details and vibrant colors achieved through pot metal and white glass techniques employed by Vellert. The silver stain used adds an ethereal quality to the composition, enhancing its visual impact. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece stands as a testament to Dirk Vellert's artistic prowess and enduring legacy in both stained glass design and engraving traditions influenced by masters like Albrecht Durer and Luca van Leyden.
